BEYOND ENERGY: INCENTIVIZING DECARBONIZATION THROUGH THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Improvements in energy efficiency and a continued focus on replacing fossil fuels with renewables have accelerated large CO2 emission reductions in recent years. However, in spite of heightened ambitions, some sectors still lag behind in decarbonization due to the need for costly rebuilds and retrofits, economic reasons, and more. Circular economy solutions support these sectors toward decarbonization of electricity generation and use to meet net-zero targets. The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, along with Enel, has outlined these ideas and more in a paper, concluding that circular initiatives implemented through public policy frameworks should be a key part of decarbonization.

ENEL AND CIRCULAR CITIES: IMPACTS ON DECARBONIZATION AND BEYOND

Cities house over half of the world’s population and generate over 80% of global economic output. They also produce 50% of the world’s waste and 70% of global emissions, accounting for 60% of all resource consumption. Enel, an energy firm, has evaluated the impact of circular principles for cities in three key urban sectors: mobility, the built environment and energy systems. Along with Arup, a professional services firm working across all aspects of the built environment, they have developed the Circular City Index to support municipalities’ transition to a circular economy.

THE BUSINESS CASE FOR CIRCULARITY & THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Today’s linear economic model is reaching a tipping point. Demand is increasing alongside the growing global population and expanding middle class. At the same time, the natural and social capital costs of non-renewable resource extraction and disposal impact the cost of doing business. Companies must get into a circular mindset to address this. The global, macroeconomic opportunities associated with the circular economy have come into focus over the last decade. According to the World Economic Forum, studies show that the circular economy presents a $4.5 trillion USD opportunity, may boost GDP by 1.1%, create more jobs and make the economy more resilient. These findings have fueled circular economy momentum globally. Building off of these points, SustainabilityX  Magazine has published eight business cases for the circular economy.

HOW SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING IS THE FUTURE

What exactly is sustainable manufacturing? According to The Association for Sustainable Manufacturing (MERA), it is the the standardized process of producing high-quality goods – a  second time – by reusing materials and conserving embodied energy in existing products. Going forward, sustainable manufacturing will play a more vital role in the circular economy.  No matter the industry, for generations to come, all manufacturing will be driven to reuse as  much as possible. Today, as we drive towards a circular economy, remanufacturing and similar forms of sustainable manufacturing are already yielding products that are like new, but better. On April 22, Earth Day, MERA celebrated the occasion with a "Circular Drive" to save outdated technology from going into landfills by collecting and donating it to Human-I-T - a non-profit organization that #remanufactures the items and makes them available to members of the community in need.

CIRCULENTS: THE NEW CONSUMERS

In 2020, the Swedish Association for Responsible Consumption launched the word “circulent.” To be sustainable consumers is not enough, we must become circulents! A circulent considers need and function before want and considers themselves a user and not an owner of an item. The use of an item is optimized during its lifetime and primary consumer behavior is to borrow, exchange, rent, repair and reuse. The possibility of future reconsumption is kept in mind for new purchases. To learn more, consider the Association's new online course "Circulents- the new consumers" (English) which will dive into sustainable consumption and circular lifestyles. The course takes place between March 28th and May 22nd and covers four themes: Sustainable and Circular Lifestyles, Entrepreneurship--Redesigning Business, Political Advocacy, and Systems Thinking

A CIRCULAR USE OF FISH SKINS - MORE VALUABLE THAN THE FISH!

For as long as Icelanders have been fishing, fish skins have been a byproduct of little value. Kerecis, a company in Iceland's Westfjords region, is transforming discarded cod skins into a valuable medical device to heal human wounds. When grafted onto damaged human tissue, the fish skin recruits the body's own cells, supporting its own ability to regenerate. The cod skins offer several advantages over many traditional wound treatments. Because there is no risk of a viral disease transfer from Atlantic cod to people, the fish skin needs only mild processing for medical use and maintains its natural structure and elements, including its Omega3 fatty acids. The fish skin is sustainably sourced, cost-efficient to produce, and free of the religious and cultural barriers associated with other skin graft products.

HOW THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY KEEPS YOUR SOFA OUT OF THE LANDFILL

12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishing waste is produced by the United States every year. This familiar and distressing cycle is the current linear economy in action: a system of take-make-use-waste that dominates consumption patterns at home and across the globe. In today’s world of abundant options and free delivery, it is easy to save money on a cheap sofa without thinking about its short lifespan. A Circular City Week platform partner, mebl, explains the environmental impact of a sofa as part of a new series of articles on furniture and circularity. Mebl outlined several solutions to this waste: “designing out waste,” meaning making use of leftover materials and designing long lasting pieces, “designing out pollution,” in furniture manufacturing, and finally, making furniture out of biodegradable materials.

ARE WE GOING TO BUILD HOUSES WITH REUSABLE BUILDING BLOCKS?

A collapsible block that can be transported flat-packed, be built into a wall and be torn down and reused elsewhere. Does this sound like a fantasy of the construction industry to you? It’s not! The startup REXCON's goal is to reduce the CO2-footprint of the building sector - and they are already on their way there with the invention of the building module ReBLOCK. The ReBLOCK makes it possible to reuse building materials for houses again, and again and again. REXCON took part in the C-VoUCHER project in which the Danish cluster for advanced production MADE was a partner. Here REXCON got support developing the ReBLOCK system. Apart from minimizing the transport, REXCON aims to make ReBLOCKs circular using a take-back system. Or in other words, REXCON aims for a return system for used ReBLOCKs instead of these ending up as garbage. This is commitment to circularity in action.

reCYCLING ACROSS NEW YORK: RECYCLING EDUCATION ON A BIKE

It’s no secret that recycling rights can be a challenge. It stems in large part from the fact that different towns, cities, and counties accept different materials in their local recycling programs. But Sims Municipal Recycling, which operates the largest curbside recycling program in the United States and services the City of New York, is on a mission to bring awareness on how to combat this problem. When their recycling educator embarked on a 500 mile bicycle tour across NY State, she wanted to make sure that she was recycling correctly along the way. So she used the website RecycleRightNY.org to lookup local recycling programs, all while documenting and sharing her journey, giving out useful recycling tips, and teaching audiences how to recycle right throughout the great state of New York. Using a platform like Recycle Right NY sounds like something we can all do in the fight to limit waste and increase circularity.
